Hi Olaniyan,

if you don't have official identifiers, I do think the best option is to
use the Q identifier in wikidata. It's the option we (Wikimedia Spain) have
used in Wiki Loves Folk (in order to have an identifier for festivals, see
for example
https://gl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lista_de_festas_de_Interese_Tur%C3%ADstico_de_Galicia,
sorry, it's in Galician, but you can see the layout and the way of working)
and we're planning to use the for monuments without an identifier. If no
item exists yet in Wikidata, it's a good opportunity to create it and, once
WLM has been run, to assign statements with the commons category and any
found image.

In fact, my suggestion would be to create wikidata items and commons
categories beforehand. Once the contest has been run, if empty categories
remain, they can be removed. From WM-ES we can assist you, by using our bot
(WikiLovesESBot).
