Hungary was late to join the international Wiki Loves Monuments contest, but this hasn’t stopped the contestants in submitting more than 2000 photos in just over ten days (due to the initial delay, the national round of the contest was open until 21 October, and 3000 more pictures were received after the European contest was over).

The Hungarian contest tried to engage amateur and professional photographers who have not contributed before to Wikimedia projects, and to that end it was organised on the most popular Hungarian photo-sharing site, Indafotó.

The contest was a success in terms of both getting photographs of around two thousand monuments (most of them had not been photographed under a free licence ever before), and engagement with over 250 photographers submitting their work.

Due to the initial delay, the jury has the double task of selecting the best images both for the European round and the overall contest. The photographers were in a mood to please the international organisers and original creators of the contest, as the best pictures include a 19th century house built in the Dutch style (a rarity in Hungary), and – of course – a windmill.

The ten pictures nominated for the European contest are shown below, and are also available on Wikimedia Commons. We recommend you watch that space in the coming weeks as we announce the finalists and winners of the national round, as well.
